Guarding Michael Jordan during a playoff game intimidates some players. It inspired John Starks.
Crushing Chicago's spirit with his 3-point shooting and giving Jordan fits with his defense, Starks led New York to a 98-90 victory in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference championship series yesterday afternoon at Madison Square Garden.
It was a significant victory for the Knicks, who were determined not to lose the home-court advantage they had worked all season to attain. They won their 26th consecutive home game using the same formula that has worked all season -- suffocating defense, dominating rebounding and timely shooting. Jordan (27 points) shot a dismal 10 for 27 from the field, including 2 for 9 during the final period, the time when Jordan usually dominates. It was also a significant defeat for Chicago, which had won seven straight playoff games this season.
Starks (25 points) was magnificent, setting a Knick playoff record by making five 3-point shots. Three of them came during a five-minute fourth-quarter barrage that helped the Knicks build an 88-79 lead with four minutes to play, a lead they never lost. Everyone expected the Starks-versus-Jordan battle to be a major factor in the series. Round 1 went to Starks.
"I don't even remember when Starks was in the CBA, and I don't remember when he first came into the league," said Jordan, referring to the minor league Continental Basketball Association. "But I know he's here now."
And Starks had plenty of help. Patrick Ewing, playing the entire second half, grabbed a playoff-high 17 rebounds to go with his 25 points. Charles Smith (17 points) was aggressive, giving New York another low-post option. Charles Oakley (14 rebounds) was an inside force, as the Knicks whipped the Bulls, 48-28, off the boards.
Starks showed remarkable poise for an emotional player faced with the biggest challenge of his career. There was no trash-talking, no head-butting, no arguing with the officials. Starks was a man on a mission, and he never stopped working until it was accomplished. Starks suffered a dislocated left pinky finger late in the game, but it was put back into place by the Knicks' trainer, Mike Saunders, allowing Starks to continue playing. Starks said the injury would not hamper him for the next game.
"A lot of players say they're going to try and stop Michael Jordan, but there's no stopping him," Starks said. "I just tried to make him take tough shots. I want to do whatever I have to do to help the team win. If it requires me to make 3-pointers, I'll do that. If it requires me to play defense, I'll do that. This is no time for me to take a break."
Asked how much Starks's defense bothered him, Jordan said: "He played well defensively, really bodied me up. He got me in tough positions where I really couldn't get the shots where I wanted. A couple of them I forced, just because I was out of rhythm. You have to credit his defense."
And sparked by Starks's offense, New York took control by starting the fourth quarter with an 11-4 run, turning a 72-69 lead into an 83-73 edge with seven and a half minutes left. Starks's second 3-pointer of the quarter gave New York a 9-point lead, and then Ewing set a pick for Starks, freeing him for another 3-pointer that put Knicks ahead, 83-73. Starks's final 3-pointer of the period gave New York an 88-79 lead with 4:20 to play. The Bulls made a last-gasp rally led by Jordan, but Mason's three-point play with a minute left in the game sealed the deal.
Starks played with no fear. As a result, the Knicks didn't lose.

ORLANDO, Fla.(AP) Dwight Howard, Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu are still standing. And that's enough for the Orlando Magic, who keep winning despite an injury decimated backcourt.
Howard had 23 points and 14 rebounds, and Lewis also scored 23 points to lead the Magic to a 100-89 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night.
Turkoglu added 22 for the Magic, who have won two of three despite missing their top three guards with injuries.
Al Jefferson had 19 to lead the Timberwolves.
The Magic's starting backcourt of J.J. Redick and Anthony Johnson combined for only seven points, but rookie Courtney Lee came off the bench to score a season-high 16. Lee shot 8-of-10 from the field and made all three 3-pointers.
"Due to the injuries, I'm getting to play more and get more comfortable with the players and the system,'' Lee said. "It shows hard work pays off.''
As long as the Magic have Howard, who leads the league in rebounding and blocked shots, they aren't out of any game.
"I would get past J.J. Redick on the pick-and-roll, and (Howard) would be right there waiting,'' said Wolves guard Randy Foye. "It's hard, you know. If anybody else on the team was there we probably would have scored all night.''
Howard had six blocks, more than two over his average.
The Magic took advantage of the Wolves' 3-of-12 shooting to open the third quarter with a 20-8 run, taking a 64-46 lead with just over three minutes left. Lee, the first-round pick out of Western Kentucky, made a layup in the final seconds to give the Magic a 70-50 lead after three quarters.
Orlando's lead grew to as many as 21 in the final period.
The Magic shot a season-high 57 percent.
Minnesota, predictably, attacked the Magic backcourt, which is missing two starters and its top reserve. The Wolves started the 6-foot-10 Jefferson at center and replaced normal center Jason Collins, who had started the last eight games, with guard Kevin Ollie.
Magic point guard Jameer Nelson has been sidelined with a strained hip flexor, but he said he will likely return Friday against Oklahoma City. Starting shooting guard Mickael Pietrus is out for at least three weeks with torn thumb ligaments, but top sub Keith Bogans has had the cast removed from his broken thumb and could have played Wednesday.
Redick, getting his second straight start in place of Pietrus, was 1-of-4 on 3-pointers and had five points.
Johnson, a journeyman signed specifically to give Nelson an experienced backup, had two points and four assists.
Minnesota shot only 33 percent in the first quarter but, despite its smaller lineup, beat Orlando 15-8 on the boards and trailed 23-19. Orlando led 44-38 at halftime.
Minnesota forward Mike Miller was helped off the court and taken to the locker room early in the third quarter with an apparent knee injury. He returned with about two minutes left in the period.
Minnesota made 36 of 87 shots and was 2-of-9 on 3s.
"Through three quarters we got great looks, we just couldn't put it in,'' Wolves coach Randy Wittman said. "You've got to score against this team.''
The Wolves outrebounded the Magic 42-31. Orlando had 19 turnovers.
"If we want to get to a higher level of play those are two areas we're going to have to take care of,'' Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said.
The Magic were coming off a 107-88 loss to the defending NBA champion Celtics in Boston, which ended a four-game winning streak.
Minnesota opened its three-game road trip with a 100-90 loss to Charlotte on Monday. The Wolves had won six of 10 and seven of the last 12 games in this series.

I tried to do something different with this video. A lot of the lyrics seem to touch base with many different characters. Mamoru, Galaxia, and Fiore all have "dark sides" what with each being tainted by the evil grasp of someone else. Usagi at one point in the Stars series seemed to have lost faith in the wars of the Senshi, but in the end she never gave up. Usagi could been seen as to represent the "truth" or perhaps the rose itself, seen so often in this series, could be what represents the truth, whatever the truth may be.

Forty-eight hours after he couldn't lift his arm or even his toddler son, Carmelo Anthony didn't let the lingering pain in his right elbow keep him from scoring baskets by the bunches or handing out high-fives by the boatload.
``You've still got to cheer, man,'' Anthony said. ``I'd rather take the pain and still cheer for my teammates.''
[ ] He had plenty to celebrate in Denver's 132-93 rout of the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday night.
After a slow start, Anthony finished with 23 points after scoring just one bucket in 14 agonizing minutes against Houston on Sunday night, which snapped his NBA-best double-digit streak at 222 games.
``It was still hurting out there tonight,'' Anthony said. ``I just wanted to try to fight through the pain.''
Chauncey Billups had 24 points, 14 assists and only one turnover for Denver (13-6), which tied the franchise mark for the best 19-game start.
Jermaine O'Neal returned from a sprained left ankle that had cost him three games and he scored 12 points to go with Chris Bosh's 24, but they couldn't keep the Raptors from being routed.
Nene had another double-double for the Nuggets, who are 12-3 since trading Allen Iverson to the Detroit Pistons for Billups, the Denver native and former University of Colorado star whose homecoming has gone better than anybody would have expected.
``I think we're heading into a good direction right now,'' Anthony said. ``I say all the time, he's bringing that leadership to this team, helping everybody out, making everybody better. You look at the scoreboard, you see five, six guys in double digits, whereas before we really didn't have that.''
Thanks to Billups' play up and down the court, this game was never in doubt even with Anthony's fitful start. During Billups' 32 minutes of playing time, the Nuggets were an incredible plus-48 on the scoreboard. Denver posted 37 assists overall, outshot Toronto 60 per cent to 37 per cent and got 39 points from three-point range.
``It's just one of those games where it seemed like everything kind of worked,'' Billups said. ``Throughout the season you usually get two or three of those games. Unfortunately, you usually get two or three on the other side, those games where nothing really works.
``The thing is you never know who that's going to be against,'' Billups said. ``When you've got things going against an opponent, it doesn't matter who's on the other side.''
Anthony's right elbow has been bothering him since training camp but has gotten progressively worse over the last couple of weeks. He received treatment on the team's off-day and skipped much of the Nuggets' shootaround Tuesday morning, then returned to the starting lineup.
He missed his first four shots and two of his first four free throws before sinking a 17-foot jumper that gave Denver a 47-28 lead. After that, 'Melo was pretty much his usual self, driving to the basket for muscle points and pulling up for sweet jump shots.
``It was really good to see him get back going,'' Billups said, ``because if we're going to be as good as we feel we can be he has to get going for us, and he had a great game tonight.''
The Nuggets built a 64-45 halftime lead and the Raptors were done.
``It was a bad day,'' Calderon said. ``Everything was bad for us.''
And good for the Nuggets.
``You can point to any starter and they all played well,'' Denver coach George Karl said. ``They all had their moments. ... There was no foolishness in the game even when we had the big lead.''
Conversely, O'Neal ripped his team's poor play.
``We're going to address it as a team tomorrow. It's embarrassing not only for us but for those who support the Toronto Raptors, the organization, the city and the country,'' O'Neal said. ``That should never happen. This is a business. We get paid a heck of a lot of money to play a certain way and if we think we can turn it on and off like that then we are fooling ourselves.''
That's the fire in the belly Raptors coach Sam Mitchell wanted to see and hear.
``For me now it's not a time to be screaming and yelling,'' Mitchell said. ``It's a time to be trying to teach and reassure people. At a certain point, when you play, you've got to almost want to fight each other after a game like this. You've got to be demanding of each other.''

Using the cost-free space simulator Orbiter (google it) and Altea's XR1 (the spacecraft). I make a hypersonic flight from KSC to Habana for a wealthy football star with a hankering for some Cuban cigars. Although it doesn't show in the video, I am using the scramjets in the high atmosphere until the point where the craft rotates to slow down at the end. Afterwards, I make a beautiful unpowered landing.
